Electricity prices in Virginia are soaring, and it's not just the typical household bills that are affected. The state, which has become the epicenter of the data center boom, is witnessing a significant surge in electricity rates, leaving residents and businesses grappling with the financial burden. According to recent data from the Heatmap and MIT's Electricity Price Hub, the average household electricity bill in Virginia skyrocketed to $192 in June, a staggering $20 increase from the previous year. This surge is not solely due to higher temperatures but also to the rising costs set by Virginia's largest utility provider, Dominion.
Dominion's rates have seen an 8% increase this year and a staggering 17% hike over the past 12 months. The base rate increase, which took effect at the beginning of the year, has contributed to this surge, with the average base rate for Dominion customers rising by 7.5% year-over-year. But that's not all; the fuel portion of the bill is also on the rise, with customers facing an additional $8 monthly charge due to rising costs. This increase in fuel charges, effective at the start of July, has pushed the generation portion of the electricity bill to approximately $78 per month.
The timing of this price hike is particularly intriguing, especially considering Dominion's ongoing efforts to sell itself to Florida utility and energy developer NextEra in a massive $67 billion deal announced in May. This merger has sparked concerns among Virginia's lieutenant governor, Ghazala Hashmi, who has raised 64 questions about the proposed merger in a detailed letter to the State Corporation Commission. Hashmi's letter highlights the unprecedented implications for Virginia's consumers and regulatory landscape, suggesting that a six-month review period may be inadequate.
NextEra's proposed solution to alleviate the burden on customers is over $2 billion in bill credits over two years, which Dominion executives estimate will amount to $10 per month. However, the effectiveness of this relief measure remains to be seen, as the overall price hike continues to put pressure on Dominion and its potential new owner, NextEra.
